Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province one of China’s three Northeastern provinces (DongBei) and has a population of about 7 million. Like most cities in China, Shenyang consists of an urban city and a large rural area that is managed by the local municipal government. (http://expatacular.com)

Shenyang is sub-divided into the following five urban districts:

Heping District (和平区 Hépíng Qū)

Better known as downtown. Many expatriates have discovered the dubious joy of being accosted at The Zhongshan Square “English Corner” by people wanting to practice their English. The district is also the home to some of the major hotels such The New World Courtyard, the Hotel Inter-Continental, and The Holiday Inn City Center. The shopper friendly Taiyuan Street is also a good shopping solution for expats.

Shenhe District (沈河区 Shěnhé Qū)

Just east of downtown. This district is proud of being the containing The Imperial Palace, (a mini Forbidden City and Shenyang’s most famous attraction), and the Shengjing Ancient Cultural Street. The four star Gloria Plaza and the Times Plaza are amongst the well know hotels in this district.

Huanggu District (皇姑区 Huánggū Qū)

Situated directly north of downtown. This district is best known for being home to Beiling Park and the North Tomb, the burial site of the Qing dynasty’s animal loving Huang Taiji. Many expatriates prefer to live near Beiling Park.

Dadong District (大东区 Dàdōng Qū)

This district located northeast of downtown.

Tiexi District (铁西新区 Tiěxī Xīn Qū)

The district contains both large blocks of residential complexes, as well as strips of small to medium-sized shopping. It is also home to the Shenyang Economic and Technological Development Area.
