Sustainable Didcot is a community action group for Didcot residents with a shared interest in the environment, living sustainably and raising awareness of climate change.

We believe that through positive action we, as a community, can reduce Didcot’s impact on this global threat.

The group follows the 1987 UN’s Bruntland Commission definition of Sustainability:

“Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

Sustainable Didcot focuses on:

Waste/recycling * Local food * Energy * Transport

We are part of the Oxfordshire Community Action Group network.

Latest News! We've just been awarded £1650.00 from SODC Councillor Mocky Khan towards our Repair and Reuse Project! That includes supporting our Repair Cafes through the year as well as our Freecycle and Vegcycle events. We've also got big plans for other repair and reuse events later in the year - watch this space!

Forthcoming events

Repair Cafe - 28th April - 2pm-5pm Didcot Civic Hall - bring your broken electricals, household items and clothes, blunt tools, and clocks, watches and mechanical items, and fix them with the help of our expert volunteers! Tea and coffee and cake available.

Community Allotment open gardening sessions - every month, next one 22nd April -  come meet us at the polytunnel on New Road allotments, get a tour of the allotment, pitch in with some gardening, take home some veggies. Stay as long as you like - session runs 11am-2pm

Freecycle and vegcycle - Bank Holiday Monday 7th May 10am-4pm, Civic Hall bring, swap or take away unwanted household items - now including small electricals - and fruit/vegetables including surplus fruit and veg donated by our partners, SOFEA, from supermarket supply chain surplus. We have a stall at the Girlguiding Didcot May Fair - it's one pound entry for adults.

Green Drinks - second Thursday of every month including April 12th, May 10th 7.30pm-9pm Cornerstone (in The Study if there's a gig on). Meet other environmentally minded locals for informal drinks.

Current projects

  • Free-cycle Live – an event to enable unwanted goods (clothes, books, toys etc.) to be transferred to others. Thus encouraging reuse, rather than items going to landfill.
  • Vege-cycle - bring and swap fruit and vegetables.
  • Community Allotment – enabling residents to learn about growing their own produce. We have a polytunnel - come and grow with us!
  • Incredible Edible Didcot – edible food garden in the centre of Didcot! Look out for the herb and fruit garden between Cornerstone and the Cinema.
  • Thermal Imaging Project – a project within Didcot, alongside South Oxfordshire District Council, to identify where heat is leaking from buildings, and to suggest solutions to this problem.
  • Dinner Time community kitchen event – using spare food (maybe in the back of your cupboard or in your allotment!) to make and share a meal with other members of the community. Aiming to reduce the amount of food we throw away.
  • Green Drinks - we meet for an informal social gathering and networking with anyone interested in the environment and sustainability on the second Thursday of the month 7.30-9pm at Cornerstone.
  • Repair Cafe - we're aiming to help people fix their broken household items.
