In 1997, we fought a proposed plan to log 113 acres surrounding Villa Del Monte, Laurel and Schulties Road, which involved helicopter logging flying above our homes, logging trucks on our neighborhood streets, posed a severe risk of landslides, and significant damage to the watershed that's shared by a number of communities including Summit Woods. We successfully blocked attempts to perform large-scale logging operations on the land surrounding the Villa Del Monte neighborhood. Thanks in part to our efforts, that land has been zoned SU and is now owned by a mountain resident who has no interest in logging. So, we are turning our attention to making our neighborhood more fire-resistant.
SWPL remains active to respond to threats to the health, safety, and environment in and around the Villa Del Monte subdivision.
Summit Watershed Protection League is a grass roots, non-profit organization founded in 1996 by neighbors in the Summit Road neighborhoods, to educate the public about the history and environmental issues in the Summit Watershed and to protect the redwood forest and surrounding areas into the future. Our current focus is on protecting our precious mountain community environment from the threat of fire danger, by organizing a neighborhood fire safety chipping program.

The Summit Watershed property was purchased in October, 2017 by a local mountain resident who has no plans to rezone the property and no intention of logging the property in the future. This great news occurred 20 years after SWPL was founded and after a successful fight to prevent the property from being rezoned for the purpose of logging during the summer of 2012 by the former Humboldt County landowner.
We want to thank everyone who contributed to our efforts to protect the Summit Watershed over the years and we will continue to be vigilant of any new logging permits in our area and any developments which may have an impact on the public health, safety and welfare of our community.
