Welcome 2017-2018

Community High School District 218 English Department Summer Reading Program 2017-2018
Research has repeatedly and routinely shown that children lose some of their hard-earned knowledge and reasoning over summer while not in school. Research has also shown that reading over summer is a powerful means to slow or stop that loss.

Community High School District 218 currently requires students enrolled in any Honors-level or Advanced Placement (AP) English course to complete summer reading as a part of the course. Summer reading is not intended to give the teacher a chance to start the curriculum early or to weed out students who may not be "honors material"--rather, it is intended as a chance for our students to authentically continue their education and keep their critical-thinking and imagination working over the long weeks of summer. Great books challenge a person's thinking and beliefs, require them to see the world through the eyes of another, demand that they attend to important issues in the world around them, and provide a chance for quiet reflection and enjoyment; the CHSD 218 Summer Reading Program strives to provide the opportunity to experience great books to all of our students.

Thank you,
The English Department of Community High School District 218

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."
