Frost Bite Run 9th January 2022

The second Sunday in 2022 saw the long delayed 490th BG Frostbite run for members of local MVT clubs.

The 9th January dawned clear and frosty, a relief after the continuous rain of the previous day.

This years route took us to Hardwick Airfield via Halesworth Aviation museum.

A few enthusiasts arrived very early all enjoying the atmosphere of the old runway on Eye Airfield. Very quickly joined by a number of other military vehicles resulting in a good attendance of assorted military vehicles and a lot of very delighted occupants all keen to meet up with old friends. One or two civilian cars also joined in, not to be outdone by the vagaries of old vehicles.

Promptly at 10:30 the group began to depart only delayed again but slightly by the arrival of a further group of military vehicles from Norfolk which were greeted with many waves and cheers.

This completed the convoy and under clear blue skies it set off through the lanes of Suffolk to the first stop, Halesworth Aviation Museum.

An easy run ensured a punctual arrival at Halesworth in good time to enjoy their excellent museum with time to enjoy a welcome hot drink and sausage roll for those who had not had breakfast.

After an hour the convoy reassembled and the route was continued through Bungay where Sunday shoppers seemed very happy to see us and we received many cheery waves of encouragement, on to Hardwick Airfield.

Here the stop was open ended but the welcome received was so warm that most vehicle owners stayed enjoying a further warm drink and a guided tour around the hangar.

At last there was time to have a good look around at just who had joined in. There was of course many old friends, always heartening to see them again. It also gave the Suffolk group members a great deal of pleasure to be able to greet and chat to members of the Norfolk MVC.

As for the vehicles…of course that famous war horse The Jeep was represented in great numbers but as well some more unusual vehicles. Especially noteworthy, a Morris Commercial, a Wartime Humber, a lovely U.S. Navy Chevy pickup, a Champ, a Dodge Weapons Carrier…the list goes on. Excellent examples each one.

The rarer stars though should be noted: 2 Daimler Dingos and a Post War Jeep CJ2A

Both Museums were extremely welcoming and most of the vehicle owners clearly intend to revisit again in the upcoming month. All being well.

Also the ideas put forward for a summer run are being put in place and all members and friends can look forward to updates after Easter on our Facebook page for “A Run to the Sun”. A trip to the coast in the early summer evening, with a short stop at the pier for a quick ice cream…you can count me in!!
