Researcher-Ph.D. Candidate (01/03/2008–31/08/2013)
Laboratory for Machine Tools and Manufacturing Engineering (EEDM)
Thessaloniki (Greece)
Throughout my research career, i participated in diverse and demanding projects in association with international research centers and local companies. I acquired skills and experience in the fields of materials’ science, manufacturing engineering and coatings’ technology. The core of my Ph.D. work focuses on the development of advanced procedures to determine the mechanical properties of thin hard PVD coatings and the investigation of fatigue fracture mechanisms. Some of my greatest achievements were:
▪ The design, development and operation of a novel materials characterization device, an impact tester.
▪ The correlation of thin coatings' mechanical and fatigue properties with the coated cutting tools' failure mechanisms.
▪ The development of an innovative methodology for the characterization of the strain rate effect on coatings behaviour during manufacturing processes (milling).
▪ The optimization of cutting tools’ cutting performance by tailoring the materials’ mechanical properties to meet specific requirements and prediction of coated tools' lifetime for specific workpiece materials.
▪ The computational validation of experimental results with appropriate FEM calculations.
Other responsibilities:
▪ Responsible for day to day running of the materials' laboratory.
▪ Investigation of materials’ mechanical properties with advanced methods.
• Quantification of the adhesion quality between coating and the substrate of cutting tools.
▪ Organization and execution of experiments in manufacturing processes (CNC machines), coatings’ characterization and materials’ testing (mechanical materials’ characterization devices).
• Experimental data processing from manufacturing processes and connection with materials’ machinability.
▪ Use of CAD/CAM systems.
▪ Technical report writing.
