The National Biomedical Engineering Honor Society at Stony Brook recognizes students of excellence who major in Biomedical Engineering. SBU AEMB's obligation is to cultivate members closer into union and to promote an understanding of the profession. We plan to become an organization where students can find resources to further their careers and be exposed to the various specializations that define biomedical engineering.
Dr. Chan has been the SBU AEMB faculty advisor since our chapter's inauguration in 2015. She is passionate about both biomedical research and education. She is currently the Co-director of the Undergraduate Program in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, fostering student professional development via experiential learning opportunities, and the DEI Committee Chair promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Her research focuses on understanding the role of mechanotransduction in disease development and treatment of various medical conditions, such as osteoporosis, obesity, and cancer. Mechanotransduction is the study of how cells sense and respond to mechanical stimuli, like those generated during exercise.
Dr. Chan is very active in promoting the quality and diversity of engineering education by developing open educational resources, online courses, technical-skill workshops (undergrad), community outreach programs (Pre-K through 12th Grade), and instructional technology.

During Leanne’s time at Stony Brook, they are studying cellular and molecular engineering. Leanne serves as the President of Stony Brook’s Biomedical Engineering Honor Society (Alpha Eta Mu Beta). Additionally, Leanne serves as Mentoring Chair for SSS Program Government. In their free time, they like to journal, read books, play video games, go to the gym, and hang out with their friends. Before becoming a Simons STEM Scholar, Leanne participated in the Science Technology Entry Program at Union College and volunteered in the Emergency Department of Samaritan Hospital.
Leanne has participated in a variety of research projects throughout their time with the Simons STEM Scholars Program, involving microfluidic cancer models, bioengineering DNA, gait analysis, and studying cellular senescence.
Nina is a senior in the WISE honors program at Stony Brook studying Biomedical Engineering with a specialization in Biomechanics and Biomaterials. Additionally, she serves as the vice president of Stony Brook’s chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta. She has been a WISE freshman mentor for three years. Nina has participated in research at Stony Brook concerning stem cell therapies for Alzheimer’s disease, as well as disease modeling using organoids. She has also conducted research at the University of Pennsylvania towards the development of a novel spatial transcriptomics assay using microfluidic devices.
Nadia is a senior in BME, on the cellular and molecular engineering track. She works in the Balazsi lab working on genetic engineering projects, and also does bio-printing with the VIP Tissue Engineering Kidneys team. Nadia is also a member of the campus emergency response team, and a chair for BMES.
Ebba is a Sophomore WISE honors student in Biomedical Engineering, concentrating in cellular and molecular bioengineering. She is interested in tissue engineering and stem cell research. Ebba is also a member of the Stony Brook Cheerleading team.
Matthew is a junior Biomedical Engineering and Applied Mathematics student specializing in biomechanics and biomaterials. He works in the Brouzes lab working on microfluidics dPCR projects and low-intensity vibration with the VIP BEAR team.
Yohani is a sophomore WISE honors student in Biomedical Engineering, with a concentration in biomechanics and biomaterials. She currently works with VIP Biomakers in creating a humanoid robot with speech and expressive movements to later be translated into wearable health technology.
