Our Events

As the Stony Brook Chapter of AEMB,

we recognize and encourage excellence in the field of Biomedical Engineering both on campus and within our community by organizing a variety of professional and social events year-round. We use these events as a platform where we can recognize Biomedical Engineers for their accomplishments, introduce Biomedical Engineering to younger students with fun and interactive projects, and educate current Biomedical Engineering students about the options and opportunities available to them.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped us with our latest Maker Day at Long Island School for the Gifted!

Fusion 360 Keychain Workshop

AEMB, TBP, and 3DPath hosted a Fusion 360 keychain design and 3D printing workshop! Everyone who attended learned how to sketch and extrude, troubleshoot, and get creative when personalizing their keychain.

Med School Panel

SBU Career Center's Heather O'Connor and Guilianna Vullo, AEMB's Ishani Bansal and Christopher Moore, and TBP's Megha Gopal interviewed students preparing for medical school applications. Valuable skills and tips were shared and attendees were able to hear from experienced interviewers.

LILTA DIY Prosthetics

Working with the Long Island Latino Teacher's Association, volunteers from SBU AEMB taught students from the LILTA summer camp about prosthetics. This collaboration gives us the opportunity to educate students from middle and high schools about one of the many real-world applications of Biomedical Engineering. Our members led interactive presentations for the students and helped them create their very own DIY prosthetic hands!

Maker Day

SBU AEMB has been invited to schools throughout Long Island to host our Maker Day event. Our members volunteered their time to organize a variety of stations where K-9th grade students participated in games that exposed them to Biomedical Engineering facets, such as the design process, circuit building, and virtual reality.

This event has always been well received and it even won us a few awards! In 2018, we won the Stony Brook College of Engineering and Applied Science (SBU CEAS) award for "Most Outstanding Event"! In 2019, Maker Day won us the AEMB National Award for "Best Community Service Event"!

Genes in a Bottle

Another one of our popular outreach events, Genes in a Bottle gives us the opportunity to go out to Long Island schools and perform experiments with K-9th grade students. The experiments give us a chance to teach students about DNA and its function in the body while also walking them through simple DNA extraction assays. The kids extract their own DNA from a cheek sample and put it in a vial they can wear on a necklace!

Arduino Workshops

We also collaborate with other STEM organizations on campus to host specialized workshops for Stony Brook students to learn how to use Arduino microprocessors. The workshops give SBU students a chance to learn the basics of code and digital electronics, as both skills are tied together in Arduino based applications!

SBU AEMB Industry Panel

SBU AEMB prioritizes the professional development of our members; our industry nights give them, and other SBU students, a chance to meet with representatives coming from an assortment of industries. These reps usually all have an extensive background in Biomedical Engineering, and are always excited to talk about how they got to where they are today!

BME Seminar Series

The SBU Department of Biomedical Engineering regularly invites esteemed professors from across the United States to discuss their research interests and progress. Our chapter is eager to advertise these talks to our members and other SBU students. They are a fantastic way learn about different fields of Biomedical Engineering and how their growth affects both academia and industry!
