Slavonian (Horned) Grebe

Podiceps auritus

One of Britain’s rarest breeding birds, a single was present on the West reservoir during the morning of the 3rd of April, 2005.

The bird seen here was moulting out of winter plumage. However in breeding summer plumage distinctive golden ear tufts give this attractive, red-listed species its international name - 'Horned Grebe'.

Number in Britain: 30 Pairs (Summer)

Status:

in London: scarce winter visitor and passage migrant.

in UK: Resident breeder, winter visitor

Habitat: Marshes, lakes and streams, also coastal in winter.

Diet: Arthropods, especially insects, fish.
