Recommended Boat Installation

In my opinion, the best feature of this project is being able to use the data on a boat. So what's the best way to do that for relatively little money? Here is what I consider to be the ultimate setup for a boat. All the links provided are to Amazon or similar online stores. These are just initial suggestions and recommendations to get you going, I'm not selling anything, including the data on this site. If you already have a tablet, you just have to make sure it has a GPS chipset. If not, your only option is to utilize one of the bluetooth (assuming the tablet is capable) receivers.

Android Tablet

- Samsung Galaxy Tab A - make sure it has an internal GPS chipset, and get the year and size you want, new or used

I prefer the Android operating system over Apple's IOS. I also think the Android navigation apps are superior to the app available on Apple's IOS. If you're using a phone, consider purchasing one that is IP67 or IP68 rated for water resistance.

App for Navigation

- LocusMaps Pro

Accessories

- Accessory charger for the tablet & other devices - (Some boats may require a hard wire solution if they don't have an accessory port)

- Cradle and mount to hold a tablet to a boat's dash (links are for Nexus 7 - adjust choice accordingly for other devices). I use this case for my Nexus 7 and slip the flap under the boat's windshield to hold it in place.

Optional

- Dual Electronics XGPS160 Bluetooth GPS device, for mobile devices that do not have internal GPS (some Apple iPads and Android tablets)

The listed tablets have internal chips that track GPS and GLONASS satellites and will work fine for this project.

The Bluetooth unit above does the same, and adds SBAS (WAAS) capability, so they have better accuracy and integrity.

Newer mobile devices with more advanced chip-sets may also track Galileo, QZSS, Beidou, SBAS, etc.

Mount it in the shade, as high & dry as possible on the boat with velcro tape or similar. It can also be placed in a dry bag to protect it.

- Waterproof case for a tablet or phone (may affect how well the cradle mount works)

- Hood for the tablet to shade the sun

Starting at around $100 (if you buy used), a boat can be equipped to utilize the data from this site. That's assuming starting from scratch on equipment. Already owning a tablet, phone or accessory will reduce the cost. To further reduce cost, a less expensive device might be preferred, or the device can be held instead of the mount option. Keep in mind the tablet is also a multi-use device...it's not a device only suited for use on the boat. This should be considered in evaluating the purchase cost.
