The Stewarts Creek Arts Academy at (SCAA) is a two week intensive theatrical training program for students entering grades 2-9 to take place June 9-20, 2025 at Stewarts Creek High School. Students are immersed in a rigorous, professional, educational experience, combining fun, experiential, interactive classes with direct, hands-on performance opportunities.
Participants receive one-on-one instruction with distinguished professionals in each discipline and collaborate with other students on small group projects or performances. SCAA strives to enrich the student both as a performer and as a person by focusing on the intrinsic links between creativity and discipline and between reflection and character. Students will be challenged to approach their theatrical training through critical thinking, observation, and analysis.
Daily classes in Acting, Stage Movement, Musical Theater, Music Composition, and Choral Music.
Featuring a staff of experienced artists who all have degrees in their field.
Classes based on the National Core Arts Standards for each grade level.
This is more than just a theater/music camp! After two weeks students will know the basics of:
· Piano skills. Every student comes out reading music and knowing the notes of the keyboard. Beginners and advanced students are welcome.
· Stage movement. How to use your body to convey meaning to an audience.
· Vocal music. Students learn an Italian art song, choral music pieces in English and Latin, musical theater, and the fundamentals of vocal health and technique.
· Acting. In hands-on, interactive classes, students study character development in a sequential curriculum designed for the emerging actor.
· Instrumental Music/Composition. Spend time with digital music stations composing music, experimenting with our Beats Laboratory, and drumming.
· Technical Theater. All students get hands-on experience in the behind-the-scenes elements of theatre. This can include lighting, audio, and set construction.
The curriculum for the acting component will be based on the work of Keith Johnstone, Viola Spolin, and Barbara Salisbury and be focused on improvisation and character creation alongside studying classic theatre through Shakespeare. The movement/dance section will center on creative stage movement and physical character creation based on the work of Jacque Lecoq, Anne Green Gilbert, and Ann Bogart. The musical segment will focus on music literacy, ear training and elemental music theory studying multiple musical styles and periods from Baroque to contemporary Broadway.
While a quality final performance product is expected and necessary for students to showcase newly acquired skills and creations, we strive to be process oriented instead of product/production driven. The staff is committed to preserving a definite distinction between the theatrical product and the theatrical training process and believes that if the process is solid and educational, the results will be exceptional products/productions. This process vs. product distinction helps to ensure that the educational experience is focused on student growth rather than a showcase of talented individuals.
The SCAA was created with the following goals.
The creation of a summer youth program that is focused on National Arts Education Standards, student assessment and student growth.
The establishment of a staff of artists who are working professionals in their field and experienced arts educators.
The development of a high quality curriculum focusing both on classic musical and theatrical literature and original student created work.
The promotion of a philosophy that values quality artistic processes, and realizes that they lead to high quality artistic products.
The establishment of a collaborative culture which will set the tone for a generation of young artists.
