While working for a week in the village of Glembe I had my first experience of village living. The trek to the village was an hour of off road 4 wheeling to a clearing that contained multiple mud huts, a blacksmithing shack, and a tree that shaded the villagers. All around the village was farmland and agriculture, and about a mile from the village was a pond that served as the main water supply. During this week I was able to execute lesson plans about sanitation and personal and sexual health while simultaneously learning about this unique villages culture, sense of community, and unparalleled way of life. In between the different lesson plans I was able to learn about how this community prepares their food, carries water back to their village from the local pond, and how they utilize all their resources to maintain a quality of life. Some of the weeks activities included cooking lessons, basket making demonstrations, and tours of their farms. All the while I was exposed to the genuine kindness exuded by each and every individual of Glembe who literally welcomed me into their village and homes with open arms. Never have I been so proud to be apart of a community that manifest such hospitality and humanity, and never could I have learned about this culture and way of life in a classroom.
