The field work at Kokrobyte Institute revolved around volunteering at a nearby public school. Throughout the week various lessons plans about health and nutrition were crafted and prepared to be shared with the students. I learned about the plant Moringa, and how it is currently being used in Ghana as a meal supplement that has the potential to help combat malnutrition. During the week I had the opportunity to work with the students and plant moringa seeds in their schoolyard where they can tend to the plants and eventually add the leaves to their meals. My peers and I also created lesson plans on the topic of health and nutrition that focused on the different food groups. The lesson plan that was taught to the kids involved making a foldable booklet that had pictures of the different categories of food as well as how much of each group that should be incorporated into each meal. Towards the end of the week I had the opportunity to play educational games with the kids such as a tree scavenger hunt. This week was by far one of the best mostly because of the hands on work and interaction with the students at the public school. In advocating and teaching about proper nutrition and helping to make it more accessible to Ghanaian boys and girls, I felt like I made a lasting impact on this community as well as gained invaluable insight into their culture and lifestyle.
