More from Robert Rodriquez:
The power of your choices as a media-maker to frame your picture will help you develop a scene or a story for your viewers. When you pick up a camera and point it at something, that’s a choice.
You will incorporate different cinematic techniques. Cinematic techniques are methods used by film makers to communicate meaning, entertain and to produce emotional or psychological response in an audience.
A frame is a visual border within which you can create an image, story or message
In video, the idea of a film frame comes from the process whereby single images are recorded on a photographic strip and when played at 24 stills or frames per second to give the illusion of motion. Even though we work with video, which is an electronic medium, rather than a medium like photographic film that works with light and chemicals, we still keep the term when we are talking about composing an image.
Create a frame with the thumb and forefinger of each of your hands.
Spend a minute or two framing things with your fingers. What do you see when you look through the frame? How does the frame affect what you see? Does it help to emphasize certain things? And minimize others?
The frame allows you to create reality within four corners. What you choose to put in the center, or what to exclude.
The Shot: A shot is continuous non-interrupted image for a period. There are different types of shots. The type of shot depends on five elements (SHAMP): the SIZE of the frame, the HEIGHT of the camera, the ANGLE of the frame,MOVEMENT of the camera and the PLACEMENTof the camera within the location or set.
Go to Camera Shots to learn about SHAMP and how to do special effects
Don't forget about the importance of adding sound to connect with the audience.
Through mise-en-scene and framing, we as filmmakers can bring our audiences into our story.
