Wellness models vary from just a few dimensions to 10 or more. "Dimensions" are areas in our life that require specific resources, planning, and attention. An 8 dimensions model is used by many universities and organizations such as SAMSHA (https://www.samhsa.gov/).
When considering how to best support an individual, community, or organization, all dimensions of wellness must be considered. It is difficult to achieve good mental health if someone is worried about their finances and continuing to accumulate debt. It is difficult to achieve good physical health if someone lives in an environment with air or water pollution, a lack of safe walking trails, a food desert, or an area without quality medical care. It is difficult to sustain positive, meaningful relationships if someone is overwhelmed at work and heading toward compassion fatigue.
Wellness programs, policies, strategies, and even trainings should be rooted in Whole Person Health. This means understanding all of the influences on health and wellbeing and exploring the relationships between the Dimensions of Wellness. Stanford Wellness emphasizes Physical, Emotional, and Social Wellness to simplify the model and conversation for clients however, we are well-versed in all Dimensions. Our workshops are categorized by Dimension of Wellness and we are happy to provide education and support in all areas.
