SOUTH ALBERTA REG'T PRISONERS OF WAR
Little has been written about the men who were taken as POWs except for that famous line "for them the war was over".
The SAR POWs fought a different kind of war. Their battles were fought against demoralization, boredom, starvation and humiliation. War left all the solders with scars of one sort or another. It was no different for the POWs. The issue of being taken as a POW is of special interest to me as my dad, Lt. Bob Crawford, along with the members of several tank crews became prisoners of war on February 27, 1945 at the Hochwald
I have some knowledge of my dad's experiences and had the opportunity of meeting with Jack Gardiner of Winnipeg who was one of the men who was captured that day. I also had the opportunity to speak with Ed Thorn who was also captured on February 27th. This page is dedicated to all the South Alberta Regiment prisoners of war. I am honoured to be able to share some of their experiences on this website. Of special interest on this page is the story of the capture and internment of some of the SAR POWs as written by Jack Gardiner. Please click on Jack's name below to read his story.
