College World Series

Every year in late May/early June thousands of softball fans flock to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to watch the eight best collegiate softball teams vie for the Women's College World Series (WCWS) championship. The first ever WCWS was held in 1969 in Omaha, Nebraska and was sponsored by the Amateur Softball Association. In 1982, the NCAA took over the WCWS. From 1982 until 1987, the WCWS was held in Omaha, Nebraska. The following two years it was held in Sunnyvale, California, In 1990, the WCWS moved to Oklahoma City where it has since been played.

Currently, the tournament starts with sixteen regional tournaments featuring four teams in each region. The sixteen winners then play in a "super regional," best-of-3 series, at the home of the higher seeded team. The eight "super regional" winners then play a modified double elimination tournament to determine which team is the national champion. The tournament has two brackets with the winner of each of the brackets playing in a best-of-3 championship.

Since 1982, the WCWS has been dominated by the Pac-12 teams who have won 24 of the 32 WCWS championships played through 2013. For a list of WCWS champions go to http://www.ncaa.com/history/softball/d1. For more about the WCWS go to the NCAA website at http://www.ncaa.com/sports/softball/d1.
