Women in politics

I wrote a blog post on Denník N (in Slovak) explaining why there are so few women in Slovak parliament, based on our article. The problem lies with political parties that do not nominate enough women on high enough positions within their candidates lists.

Family policies

BSE Focus wrote popular research summaries of my work with Libertad González

In the first paper, we find that a generous benefit paid at birth of a child led to more births in Spain in 2007-2010. Approximately 70,000 more children were born. Read the first popular research summary here.

In the second paper, we find that a cash transfer to poor and single women before their pregnancy led to fewer births of very small babies in Spain in the late 2000s. Read the second popular research summary here.

COVID-19 and fertility

In a blog post in Nada es Gratis (in Spanish), Libertad González and I look at the impact that the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had on fertility in Spain. A drastic decrease in the number of births by 20% in December 2020 and January 2021 was followed by a recovery in March and April 2021. See a brief summary of these results here.

In an interview in Denník N (in Slovak), I explain the impact that the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had on fertility in Slovakia and I compare it to the developments in other European countries. Here is a brief summary of the interview.

Childhood mortality and malaria

The results of a World Bank study written with Gabriel  Demombynes were featured in several media outlets.

First, the media focused on an impressive reduction in childhood mortality in Africa in the 2000s (e.g. The Economist, The Washington Post, Le Monde).

Later on, The Guardian included our results in an article about malaria, bed nets, and childhood mortality in Kenya.

Child marriages

I wrote a blog post in BLISS explaining the negative impact that child marriages have on children's mortality in Bangladesh, based on my article.

Education

A newspaper article written with Miroslav Beblavý in Denník N (in Slovak) focusing on the quality of private universities in Slovakia reveals that they function with relatively few resources and do not produce high-quality research.

Nobel Laureates Meeting

In an interview for my alma mater, The Graduate Institute (IHEID), I share my experience in attending the 6th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences in Germany in 2017, where I met Nobel Prize Laureates in Economics.
