When you join South Oxhey Allotment Association (SOAA) you become a member of an active association. SOAA run the 4 South Oxhey allotment sites on behalf of the Three Rivers District Council (TRDC). In order for the association to be successful we need support from all members.
The Main aims of the association are to promote and protect our allotment sites, to act as a voice for association members, and to liaise with the council and surrounding neighbours when problems arise.
Without, an active association, often allotment sites become neglected and in some cases sites are lost forever to development so there has never been a better reason to be active in the SOAA.
Many people have the idea that associations are there to tell you what to do and interfere where it is not needed, this couldn't be further from the truth. There is an appointed Committee that will ensure that the tenancy agreement rules with TRDC are upheld, these rules and our constitutional obligations are reflected in the individual plot holder's tenancy agreements.
You don't need to become heavily involved if you don't wish to, simply being a paid-up member helps however, it is extremely important to support the team of unpaid volunteers by following the rules of the tenancy agreement, attending the Annual General Meeting, and keeping the communal areas on the sites maintained.
All funds raised via rent go straight back into the allotment sites, contributing towards our rent to TRDC, public liability insurance and membership to the National Allotment Association. We also purchase communal equipment, stationery, and items for site maintenance.
The committee have regular meetings to discuss issues and concerns, if you have anything you wish to discuss at the committee meetings please raise this with your site representatives, use the site post boxes, or email the committee.
We have many events throughout the year including working parties, seed and plant swaps and end-of-season suppers. These can be a good way to get to know your committee and fellow plot holders, it's a good way to make new friends and share tips and stories of your experience.
