How do you export sketchup files so that you can work in them in Illustrator CS4? The only way I have managed to do it thus far has been to export and save the sketchup file as a 2D jpeg and then open it in Illustrator. Is there a better way? Any suggestions or advice owuld be much appreciated! Thanks!

Based on my experience exporting to CorelDraw, which is similar to Illustrator, dxf or eps are both vector-based and both work, although eps seems to preserve polylines whereas dxf does not, making it first choice. The catch is that you need SU Pro to get these export filters.

From SU Pro you can export an EPS or PDF file. Both export a 2D line drawing with colour fills (no textures) for surfaces.

From SU Free you can get essentially the same result by printing to a PDF printer with the "Use high-accuracy HLR" setting enabled in the Print dialog box. Works with Pro too, of course.

Illustrator opens PDF files just fine, and you can even use the PDF format as your standard save format.
