material that glows in dark
Old SketchUp forum thread with an innovative method-of-work. (Note the below mentioned fog effect was added in SketchUp 6. In SketchUp, go to Window > Fog.) catamountain 7/23/15

Hello,
Does anyone have the idea on how to make a material that glows in dark to mimic a light source? I know it's hard to create light effect in SU, but maybe someone has aleady tried it, and can give me some suggestion.
Thanks!

Hailan,
As far as I can tell from searching the forum on this subject, what you ask is not doable in sketchup. You need a renderer. Try 'search' for 'lighting'.

Yeah, not an easily doable thing, here is an idea though. This is using a semi transparent cone and fog to create night sky.

I would turn OFF cone's edges.
See my idea. All "lights" are just geometry with textures on dark background. Pure fake.
I guess you have to think about this - what makes images looks like a night one? Then just fake it. Mayve this would be easier in Photoshop with its light filters

Chris,
Thanks a lot for your idea! And I like your night view!
Now I've got another question about "fog" that you mentioned. How did you make the "fog", which can be a good way to show the volume of the light.
Thanks!

The fog effect is available on this website, TONS of good scripts:
http://www.crai.archi.fr/rld/index.php
Here is a direct link to download the fog script:
http://www.crai.archi.fr/rld/plugin_details.php?id=152 [use the wayback machine to open the dead link]
Save the .rm file to your plugins folder in your SU directory.

5-17-2015 update, catamountain: Fog was added to SketchUp in version 6. Find it in the Window menu in SketchUp. Also, look at the Eneroth Fog Tool for additional fog control.

Chris,
Oh, I didn't know I can add script onto the program!
I've 2 questions about it:
1. Is this scrip only for SketchUp 4?
2. The file format I downloaded is "fog.rb.txt", should I just change the file extension directly by deleting "b.txt" and type "m" on the file name? (sorry for such basic question)
Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Works in V4 and V5. Just delete the ".txt" - ruby scripts should end with ".rb" "rm" was a typo.

Thank you Paul!, and sorry about the typo....didn't catch that one. I generally mistype every 2nd word and have to go back spellcheck myself. Sometimes they slip through the cracks though :)
