Wooden Pulley

2012

For the Klondike competition river crossing some people use a carabiner or an "s" hook. Karl had the idea to use a big pulley. Pulleys of that size are expensive so he made one on the lathe from a block of oak. He had the idea to use a pulley so you could put a person in the sled for the "river crossing" and there would be no friction when hauling the person across. He tested this out and it worked very well. Then they had the idea to make a light weight bamboo sled. This sled was not built to carry 200 pounds of person and gear while suspended, so the pulley was never used in competition.
