2018 Skagway CBC Summary
Our autumn weather leading up to the CBC was about average for temperature, but below average for precipitation. The ground was bare and dry until a small snowfall a couple of days before count week. On count day temps hovered in the mid 20s, most areas had about 1-2" of snowpack, and waters were mostly open.
Participants on count day numbered 16, including the 4 brave birders who drove down from Whitehorse despite a discouraging forecast. Seven (7) routes were covered by 11 field observers, and 5 feeders were watched by 6 people.
Twenty-seven (27) species were seen on count day. Two hybrid gulls were seen on count day, but hybrids are not included in the count total. Two (2) additional species were recorded during count week. The total number of individual birds seen on count day was 536. This was our lowest total of individuals since our circle was started in 2002.
Three new birds were added to our overall species list: Boreal Owl, Rock Dove, and Glaucous-winged x Glaucous Gull hybrid. The Rock Dove joined our resident flock of Eurasian Collared-Doves this past summer. The EUCD flock is well established and breeding, with numbers holding stable in the teens for the past couple of years.
A small flock of 28 Bohemian Waxwings were the only representatives of our familiar winter flocks - no Pine Siskins, Repolls or Crossbills were seen.

* How count day number of species calculated:
Each species counts once,
"genus, sp." counts only if no species present,
forms do not count,
hybrids do not count,
"cw" birds do not count (but will be included
in the week total)
