Summary
A few volunteers helped manage nesting gulls and terns near the airstrip again this year. The number of volunteers and the frequency that they visited the site was not as much as last year. The tern nesting protected area on the Ore peninsula was set up and available to the terns.
Covid-19 pandemic measures shut down cruise ship and most other tourism until mid-July. Therefore, the level of human activity in Skagway was greatly reduced from previous years in April, May and June, and lower than normal in July, August and September.
Skagway had record snowpack over the winter of 2020-2021. In June, a flood event washed out the terns that had been nesting at the Airstrip river bar site.
