Moulds
Register shows a number of builders. It may be that some did fit out work only. Known users of GRP moulds:
AH Moody
Essex Yachts
Salthouse New Zealand
Cavalier Yachts NSW
Aquarius Yachts Qld
Marine Entrepreneur George Fox imported the mouldings into Australia (from UK presumably) in the early 1970’s and set up a factory in Victoria. The demand was not great and an offer from a New Zealand builder (presumably Salthouse) saw them being shipped to New Zealand. (edit 20/4/08 from Australian Boating Sept 1984)
Salthouse New Zealand owned the moulds for a while and built complete hulls and decks, buying them from Australia. Salar Vee hull was in the mould as it was shipped to New Zealand from Australia (to assist protecting the mould in shipping) and Salthouse finished. Salar Vee was the 1975 Auckland Boat Show display boat and presumably hull No 1. (Edit 17/3/08 update from Phil Lack)
Guy Keon of Cavalier Yachts, NSW, Australia tracked down the moulds and re-imported them to Australia. In conjunction with Laurent Giles UK, the moulds were revised with first yacht being produced in 1983. The moulds were used also by Aquarius Yachts, Brisbane, Australia No information as to where they are currently. Edit 20/4/08
The following extract from web site http://www.sunmaid.org.au/hist.htm mentions Salar 40 moulds, although appears none built – no further mention of Salar in article (Sunmaid history)
“At Christmas 1979. Chris and Enid Hall moved their business to Paynesville on the Gippsland Lakes, to continue building the range of trailer yachts as well as the Salar 40, a luxury motor sailor. Unfortunately, the business only survived for a further six months and in July 1980 went into liquidation, poor cash flow being named as the cause. Apparently, they still had plenty of orders on their books. By this stage, Chris Hall had produced a total of 243 SunMaids, 56 SunBirds and 24 SunBird Motor Sailers, an amazing feat for any boat builder in Australia.” 1/9/07
Wayfarer V 1976 New Zealand built Salthouse Salar – History (Phil and Jill Lack)
At the 1975 Auckland Boat Show, Sir(?) Fisher (from the Fisher and Paykel company) ordered his boat which became Wayfarer V. Unfortunately he only lived about 10 months after she was launched and Jim Maclaren bought her after his death and sailed her back home to Sydney, Australia, where he and wife Joy, lived on her for many years at CYCA, Rushcutters Bay, as Jim and Joy had sold their home in Sans Souci to finance the purchase of the yacht.
As an interesting note, their daughter Kay Cottee, (the first female sailor to perform a single-handed non-stop circumnavigation of the world) lived aboard Wayfarer V in Pittwater, Sydney for about 3 months during final preparations of her boat, First Lady. Jim and Joy stayed aboard Wayfarer V for the next 6 months talking to Kay almost every day on the HF radio.

Hero – 1973 Melbourne Australia - Sales and Nautical Service (Rodney and Elizabeth McClure)
Enchantress from 1973 to 2001, when she was renamed Hero in about 2001, when she was purchased by the McClures. Bill Mayo owned her for the previous 16 years and would probably still own her, if he hadn't died.
She was built in Sandringham, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia at Sales and Nautical Service. This ship followed Crispian through the yard. It is believed that the yard went broke as they put too much effort into the product for poor return. She is certainly a well built vessel. W.T. Joyce was the first owner and had to finish off in another yard. Later he sold her to someone in Sydney before it was sold to Bill Mayo. Apparently Hero originally had a lovely wooden clinker style dinghy on the davits for many years. Only a purist would do that to themselves.

Xanthus of Sark– 1972 Essex Yacht Builders UK (Peter and Muriel Blunden)
Xanthus of Sark'is in Croatia at Split. She was built in 1972 by the Essex Yacht Co in England. She is made of GRP and is the'Buccaneer'version with the raised poopdeck and large stern state cabin. She is ketch rigged with tan sails. She still has her original 72 horse power Perkins 4236 engine which has never let me down.I am only the second owner.I bought her in Malta in 1996.From there I cruised with my wife Muriel and my three sons and their partners to Sicily and Tunisia.Later we cruised the Greek Ionian islands for some years before moving to Croatia where my sons still join us from time to time.We only live aboard during the summer and lay her up ashore during the winter when we return to our home in Surrey.
