Key Elements of Mythology
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan will be our next novel. You will read to learn about Percy's adventures within the story. As Percy faces different challenges, pay close attention to how he responds. It will tell about his character.
For the Mid Unit 1 Assessment, you will be asked to read a section of the novel. For this section, you will be asked to:
Write a gist (what the section is mostly about)
Identify a challenge Percy is faced with and his response
Identify a challenge Percy is faced with and his response
Infer things about Percy based on his actions
How has Percy changed from the beginning of the novel to where we are now?
You will identify different examples as to how this novel aligns with "The Hero's Journey". As you are reading the novel, begin thinking about the theme or message. You will identify how the theme is similar to other famous Greek myths.
For the Unit 1 assessment, you will read an assigned section of the novel. As you read it, think about a quote from the novel that aligns with "The Hero's Journey". You will complete a graphic organizer that includes one quote from the novel and one quote from "The Hero's Journey". This quote should help you learn something about Percy as a hero. Please remember to include the entire sentence. In your essay, you will include an introduction, your two quotes and how they are related, and what you learned about Percy as a hero.
For the second unit you will find a common theme among classic myths and The Lightning Thief. This link, How to find a theme?, will help you identify the theme of a text. You will write two essays proving your theme using evidence from the story.
For the Mid-Unit 2 assessment, you will write an analytical mini-essay. For this assessment you will:
Write an introduction that introduces both body paragraphs of your writing.
What are the significant elements of mythology in the Prometheus text? Explain how elements of mythology in the plot make Prometheus a classic myth.
What is an important theme in this myth? Explain how key details in the myth help contribute to this theme.
Write a conclusion that explains how an element of mythology connects to a theme of the myth.
For the end of Unit 2 assessment, you will find a common theme which connects The Lightning Thief and "Cronus". This is your prompt.
What is a theme that connects the myth of Cronus and The Lightning Thief? After reading the myth of Cronus and the novel The Lightning Thief, write a literary analysis in which you do the following:
• Summarize the myth and present a theme that connects the myth and the novel
• Describe how the theme is communicated in the myth
• Describe how the theme is communicated in The Lightning Thief
• Explain why myths still matter and why the author may have chosen to include this myth in the novel.
