Our next novel is Frightful's Mountain by Jean Craighead George. Frightful is a peregrine falcon and her story is filled with excitement and adventure. With this novel, you will gain an understanding of how human actions have environmental consequences. You will identify an argument or specific claim, as well as evaluate these claims citing specific evidence.
For the Mid-Unit 1 assessment, you will be asked to watch a video and read an article. For each one you need to identify the argument the author is making. Once you identify the argument, look for claims the author uses to make the argument and evidence to support each claim.
Now that you have more knowledge of DDT you probably have formed an opinion of the chemical pesticide. For the Unit 1 assessment, you will write a persuasive essay stating your opinion of DDT and why you have this opinion. To support your opinion, you will present two claims and for each claim you will provide 2 pieces to evidence. You will conclude your essay by restating introduction and sum up your argument based on your claims.
Your final assessment for Frightful's Mountain will be something different. You will create a poster to promote your stand on DDT. This will be done in class on paper provided. Your poster will be assessed by the following:
Argument/Claim on DDT (title/catchy phrase)
Evidence to support claim (research)
Picture to support (illustration)
Color of poster
Detail/neatness
For the second unit of this novel, you will learn how to research a topic and evaluate articles. For the assessment to this unit you should be familiar with these graphic organizers. You can use these graphic organizers for the following articles.
