Therapeutic Massage

Some people think of Massage as quite a modern therapy. However, we know from ancient texts that the Chinese were practising a form of massage more than five thousand years ago. It was also popular amongst the Greeks and Romans . Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, recommended that physicians be trained in the art of massage.

Physiologically, massage can help with tired, aching muscles, improve blood and lymph circulation, aid digestion, increase elimination of toxins, improve posture, treat chronic or sports injuries and generally speed up the process of healing. The various movements and techniques used in massage affect the skin, muscles, blood vessels, lymphatic system, nerves and some of the internal organs.

Psychologically, massage can help reduce stress and anxiety by the simple means of touch. A soothing massage allows us to let go of muscular tension, leaving us feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Therapeutic massage is applied directly to the skin using a nut or seed oil as a medium, so if you have any allergies please be sure to inform Paul before the treatment. A range of techniques are employed, from gentle effleurage to deeper kneading, hacking and cupping. Treatment takes place on a massage couch.

Whilst it is necessary to undress down to your underwear, you will be left to change in private and every attempt is made to protect your modesty by screening you with a sheet during treatment.

Before you begin a massage treatment, you will be asked some questions regarding your past and present state of health and any medication (including herbal and homeopathic remedies) used.

Certain conditions (e.g. thrombosis), are unsuitable for massage and the questions are simply intended to bring these to Pauls attention.

Shiatsu Massage Treatment

Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese healing art, a physical therapy which supports and strengthens the body's natural ability to heal and balance itself. It works on the whole person, the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual.

It is based on traditional Chinese medicine, using the same theory, points and channels as Acupuncture with influences from recent Western therapies. However, no needles are used

Shiatsu means 'finger pressure' in Japanese. The practitioner uses touch, comfortable pressure, massage and soft manipulative techniques which adjust the body's physical structure and balance its energy flow.

A deeply relaxing experience, regular treatments can alleviate stress and illness and maintain health and well-being. It can help in a wide range of conditions, from specific injuries to more general symptoms of poor health.

Shiatsu takes place on a padded mat at floor level, although it is possible to receive Shiatsu whilst seated.

You remain fully clothed at all times.
