Engineering is rather important in the modern world. Engineers apply math, science, computational thinking, and other knowledge to create, build, improve materials and structures in our living world. Engineering design as an important practice is now emphasized in the Next Generation of Science Standards.
Watch this TEDxTokyo talk given by Shigeru Ban, an architect who “begun his experiments with ecologically sound building materials such as cardboard tubes. His remarkable structures are often intended as temporary housing for disaster-struck nations such as Haiti, Rwanda, Japan. Yet often the buildings remain a beloved part of the landscape long after they have served their intended purpose.” (source of quote)
Now think of some design challenge task using paper or cardboard as the primary materials for elementary students to practice engineering design. Share your ideas on the discussion board of Blackboard.
