Welcome to the Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club Sailing Academy

This message is being delivered to begin communications about our 2017 sailing season. The Shelburne Sailing Academy has experienced significant and lasting growth in the past years of programming. None of this would have been possible without the support of our dedicated volunteers and from the Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club membership at large. We would like to once again acknowledge and celebrate these initiatives and volunteers, and further use this progress to set standards for all aspects of the 2017 year. Our goal this year is to be selected as Sail Nova Scotia’s and/or Sail Canada’s Sailing Program of the Year.

This summer our program will be managed and executed by 2017 Sailing Director Bob Erwin, the Sailing Academy committee, as well as our returning Head Coach, Max Page --- Nova Scotia’s 2015 Community Coach of the Year during his first year in Shelburne. Other Coaching staff includes our new race coach Margaret Kennedy and introductory coaches Tanner Christie and Tatum Arcon. Along with these dedicated employees we are fortunate to have a team of volunteers of all ages and skill sets, which allows us to offer one of the most high quality and accessible sailing centres in the province. Our coaches have both competitive racing and program management experience, and they have been working hard to learn from the current and past SHYC leaders to offer a comprehensive and exciting CANSail experience. On behalf of our new leaders, and our team of enthusiastic and qualified instructors, we wish to (once again) welcome you, your family, and our junior sailing participants into SHYC’s 2017 sailing community.

This pre-season we hope to encourage all members, parents and participants to further inquire about the variety of different sailing opportunities offered at our club throughout the 2017 season, whether it be pre/post season participation, volunteer opportunities, recreational racing opportunities, or exposure to adult keelboat and dinghy sailing. This summer we also intend to reinforce the SailCanada’s CANSail dinghy initiatives and potentially expand our scope to incorporate even younger sailors.

This initial contact also intends to open direct lines of communication between SHYC members, the Junior Sailing participants, and the SHYC coaching staff to offer an understanding of what we do, to stay up-to-date with upcoming events, and to answer any and all questions to stay current with all of our sailing and training activities.

Additionally, we would like to mention SailCanada’s newly developed national evaluation system called ‘CANSail.’ The CANSail program sets the national standards of sailing skills during formalized sailor development. This CANSail program will enable sailors to work toward their sailing goals in a quantifiable approach. If you would like to learn more please contact Claire Haliburton at the Yacht Club or the Head Coach directly 902 875-4757.

** Finally, Please note, that only 20 spaces per week are available in the July and August months for eligible participants, friends, and family who intend to sign up for our junior and adult sailing programs. This also includes Adult Sailing offerings as early as June. Please inquire more for spring opportunities. As spaces are limited, potential participants are encouraged to sign up online at www.shyc.ca, through our main clubhouse, or by contacting shyc@eastlink.ca before it’s too late!**

On behalf our coaches, and our junior sailing program we’d like to thank you for your interest in sail training and development, and we look forward to working with you and our sailors this summer, and for countless summers to come!
