The Shawnee water system goal is to provide a safe and aesthetically appealing drinking water to all our consumers.
Our primary water source comes from the North Fork of the South Platte River. There are also two emergency back up wells.
The process:
Raw untreated water is first processed through a three-stage filtration system consisting of two roughing filters, then two intermediate filters, and one final filter. While the filtration systems primary function is to remove micro-organisms and biological contaminants, it also aids in removing suspended matter and particulates in your water supply.
The water is then chlorinated with a commercial bleach known as (Sodium Hypochlorite). A chemical used to provide an additional means of treating the water for biological contaminants and maintain disinfection throughout the systems network of pipes. In addition, a corrosion control inhibitor (Soda Ash) is added to the water to lessen the effects of corrosive water.
Finally, treated water enters a 50,000 gallon water storage tank where it is gravity fed into the Shawnee distribution system.
Current Rates for Water consist of 3 service fees and usage fees: Usage for an average 2800 gallons per month cost is 1.1 cents per gallon. Upgrade Fee which covers improvements made $60. Meter Fee which covers costs of metering $30. Facilities Fee which covers maintenance costs $30.
