As we age the energy needed by our bodies also changes, but our eating habits do not, therefore we end up wearing the excess.
The graphs below, are a plot of the energy you need in one day to maintain your weight (equation from Noakes 2005*).
If you eat food with more than your daily kilojoules then you gain weight.
If you eat less than your daily kilojoule intake you loose weight.
The assumptions are designed to reflect a "typical" person:
Solid line - Moderate exercise throughout life
Dotted line - Moderate exercise up to the age of 30, Moderate exercise between 30-50, Light exercise between 50-80, Inactive 80 and older
Female assumed to be 160 cm tall and a weight of 63 kg
Male assumed to be 180 cm tall and a weight of 80 kg
So the trick is to eat well and get all of your nutrition, but to eat less kilojoules as you age.
