What Have We Been Using To Combat Virus & Malware?                 12/15/2010

      - What The Pro's Use

It's tough out there. There just isn't 100% perfect remedy tools to keep the script kiddies from harming your systems costing you hours upon hours or recovery time, money, and loss.

The best we've found and worked with so far, and this is a constantly revolving list:

To try getting a resolution to your PC Systems Malware Issues, it is most likely you will need to run multiple removals of these different Malware Programs at any one repair session, to try to effect repairs of an infected system. Most of these software programs are NOT plug and play, and require proper configuration to actually work and perform as desired, to give you a resolution and fix. Be careful not to get 'sucked in' to the Pay-Me-Now offers on opening Web Site pages, when unnecessary.

Many of these programs with module-limits are available from the source(s) in "freeware" home use versions, and at CNet www.cnet.com

At times, systems are found so extremely infected, it is necessary to restructure the whole PC hard drive, reinstall the OS, and Application Programs. Have your OS Systems Discs at hand, and learn the Recovery Console as well. Have you executed a Restore Point on your System? Do you know what that is?

What?!? Your Data Files and Pictures are not backed up, you say! Well, that's a struggle especially with system hard drive failure. It can cost upwards of $1,400.00 to send a disc drive out for "what you get, is all we could get, you're paying anyway" data recovery. Why not get a NAS (Network Attached Storage) or USB external hard drive unit or two. 1TB Units have become available at very good price points of late. Or, network to anothe rPC System and "cross-backup" files. Learn how to Backup your PC System - there's XCOPY, COPY, your System Scheduler, learn how to Batch Script File, make a Short Cut Icon, use NTBackup, and many downloadable free limited editions and commercial backup programs as well. And don't forget the USB solid state 'drives' and memory sticks as viable backup units, depending on the size of your data. These have virtually replaced floppy drives. Versions of CDs and DVD Drives have limited use and can be troublesome as regular backup media. Portable NAS and hard drive units have relegated tape to the junk pile for home, and small business. It is of oppinion, on-line Internet backup systems, just aren't enough it for many reasons, especially for data backup size.

Internet connection perimeter appliances are an immense help too. A cheapo NAT Router with a crappy Firewall is just not enough. Unified Security Gateways of all sizes, capabilities, and subscriptions services are available. Perimeter, PC Client, and Server protection individually is not, I repeat, is not a singular stand-alone solution against visus and malware, but together combine the best protection you can manage to have, even though it is still possible to get infections. Security is a mitigated risk, to the technology as available, and what you need to protect. As far as Wireless LAN Access Points and Routers, yes they "work out of the box', but do you know how to correctly configure a WLAN System with up to seven layers of WLAN Security? Do you know what a Wireless Radius Security Appliance is? How about Wireless in the DMZ for guests not allowing them access to your Systems LAN?

It's scary out there, and you probably didn't even know that bear was stalking you...
