Readings on the Ultimate Questions: An Introduction to

Philosophy, (2nd or 3rd edition), Nils Rauhut and Renee

Smith Editors.

Objectives:

  1. Attain an understanding of the philosophical issues within the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of religion, ethics, and political philosophy.
  2. Know the great philosophers, what they thought, and be able to critique them.
  3. Become a better thinker by developing critical thinking skills.

Course Requirements:

Essay: 25% of grade (100 points), 5 - 7 pages, topics will be discussed in class.

Mid-term: 25% of grade (100 pts).

Final Exam: 25% of grade (100 pts).

Quizzes: 25% of grade (100 pts), 7 quizzes with the top 5 being recorded, no make-ups.

Participation: Students who regularly participate in class will earn 15 bonus points.

Grading Policy:

A+ = 400-387, A = 386-373, A- = 372-360

B+ = 359-346, B = 345-333, B- = 332-320

C+ = 319-306, C= 305-280, D = 279-240

Attendance and Classroom Etiquette:

In general, students who skip classes earn the lowest grades. To excuse an absence, please email me in advance. Please do not disturb your classmates or my lecture by arriving late. Late students will not be allowed in the room.

Plagiarism:

Plagiarism shall be punished according to the guidelines set forth by Chaffey College.

Plagiarists will receive an F for the assignment.
