Albany Middle School DOES NOT provide materials for the Science Olympiad team. Our faculty advisor Ms. Coriell may have materials but this is not guaranteed. Therefore, event coaches (parent volunteers) are in charge of purchasing materials on their own for their students to help them prepare for that event.
Now you may wonder, how do I know what materials to buy?
Got to scioly.org and look select the event you are coaching to better understand the event.
Look at the event videos for a even more detailed description of that event (event videos coming soon)
Check in with Coach Ankit and/or Ms. Coriell to make sure that they don't already have the available materials to offer you before going off to buy new ones (Protip: ask other coaches of other events or students of other events if anyone has and is willing to donate materials. You and your students might not have the materials but others may have them somewhere in their house!)
(Important Note: The build-it projects require materials. Some of the best materials are in the toy box or second-hand store. Some events can be built totally form Lego, Erector, or Mechanix sets. More sophisticated designs may require trips to the electronics store or hardware store. Some local companies have lots of scraps. Cabinet shops may give away very nice hardwood scraps. Radio Shack sells some excellent experimenter kits that help test out or teach basic electronics or physics concepts. )
