There is a fairly simple argument about industrial design that goes: designers help create demand for goods and services; increased consumption of goods and services lead to increased waste of natural resources and contribute to global warming through CO2 emissions, landfill, toxic environments etc. therefore; designers are, directly or indirectly, responsible for a great deal of the issues we are currently facing.

If you are going to work in design, how do you respond to this argument? Terms such as green, eco, ethical, fair, sustainable, recycled, recyclable are used with increasing frequencyby both manufacturers and designers. It has been argued that any responsible designer cannot avoid dealing with the ethical component of manufacture and consumption. But what do these terms and philosophies mean? How can a designer engage with these ideas of sustainability? What are the design tools, where is the methodology? This project will NOT teach you how to become a “sustainable designer.” It is structured to raise your awareness, encourage critical thinking, and develop your research skills to do with issues ofsustainability. It i

s clear that these affect not only your design practice but the entire context in which you design; from raw materials to manufacture, from packaging to transport, from marketing to consumer and post-consumer, from local practices to international legislation.

Working in pairs, you are asked to undertake a piece of detailed research into how a particular product has come into being, and possibly what is likely to happen at the end of its life. This research should implement the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) methodology devised by Michael Braungart and William McDonough in their 2002 book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. This details Five principle areas to be evaluated.
