Sarkhej Roza is a mosque and tomb complex located in the village of Makarba, 7 km south-west of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state, India.

Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Bakhsh of Anhilwad Patan, the friend and adviser of Ahmad Shah I, retired to Sarkhej in his later life and died here in 1445. In his honour a tomb, begun in 1445 by Muhammad Shah II, was, in 1451, finished by his son Qutbuddin Ahmad Shah II ... Sultan Mahmud Begada completed the complex by excavating a central tank and adding a number of pavilions and a small private mosque ... Further additions to the complex were made in 1584 A.D., when Akbar's forces defeated Muzaffar III.

Sarkhej Roza comprises one of the most elegant and unique architectural complexes of Ahmedabad. In its architecture, Sarkhej Roza is an example of the early Islamic architectural culture of the region, which fused Islamic stylistic influences from Persia with indigenous Hindu and Jain features to form a composite “Indo-Saracenic” architectural style.

The complex is called "Acropolis of Ahmedabad", due to 20th century architect Le Corbusier's comparison of this complex's design to the Acropolis of Athens.

Tips :

Sarkej Roza draws more visitors on Thursdays and Sundays.

The only time you get to see the lake (Ahmed-Sar Talav) full, and it's worth seeing, is late June to early Sep. The lake dries up quickly once it stops raining.

AMTS bus route 31 (and 35, I think) pass Sarkhej; they start at the Lal Darwaja Bus Stand.

Broad gauge train service (unreserved, infrequent) between Gandhigram (Ahmedabad) and Botad, via Sarkhej, started June 2022.

I was able to charge my mobile phone within Jama Masjid; there are some electrical sockets along the corridors :-)

There are steps to the roof of Tomb of Ghiyasuddin Ali Qazwini; to get a better view of the Tomb of Ganj Baksh.

The easiest way to reach the Sluice Gates is from the Tomb of Ghiyasuddin Ali Qazwini. There is a path between houses to the west of this tomb. The path leads to Makarba Lake, turn left there.
