St. Anthony of Padua Prayer Ministry of St. Laurence Catholic Church, Sugar Land brings together the young and old alike, to honor St. Anthony of Padua and pray for his intercession helping to deepen their devotion to Jesus. This ministry caters to the harmonious gathering of devotees from all Christian denominations and religious affiliations to pray and worship in the Catholic tradition, through the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and Novena on every Tuesday. It encourages the attendees to remember that God, in his love, may have his own way of answering their prayers. This devotion had started at St. Laurence in April 1997 with annual feast celebrated on the Saturday close to the feast day of the Saint (June 13) (2025 Annual Feast was celebrated at 7:00 pm, Saturday, June 14) and continues to attract many, particularly young adults who may be on the verge of leaving their faith, by helping them to recommit themselves to the Catholic faith.
The service consists of reciting Holy Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 6:30 PM and Holy Mass at 7:00 PM followed by the novena to the Saint. It is offered at the Church on first Tuesdays of the month, and at the Divine Mercy Chapel on other Tuesdays.
We hope you and your family will have a warm and spirit-filled experience with us as we worship and fellowship together at our services, and events. May God bless you abundantly.
St. Anthony of Padua was one of the most powerful and insightful preachers of his time. His surviving sermons, particularly his two collections known as the Sermons for the Sundays and Festivals (Sermones Dominicales et Festivi), reveal a deep focus on Scripture, morality, and the practical application of faith.
We will be praying over and reflecting on 13 topics from the Sermons of St. Anthony of Padua during the next 13 weeks
1. The Person of Christ and the Mystery of the Incarnation - St. Anthony constantly preached the divinity and humanity of Christ, the Word made flesh, who is both Savior and Judge.
2. The Power and Authority of Sacred Scripture - He was called the “Ark of the Testament” because of his mastery of Scripture; he used it to teach, correct error, and uplift the faithful.
3. Repentance, Conversion, and Renewal of Heart - A major theme: turning away from sin, softening the heart, and returning wholeheartedly to God.
4. Combatting Heresy and Defending True Doctrine - He preached boldly against the Cathars and other heresies—clarifying Catholic teaching with strength and charity.
5. Humility as the Foundation of Christian Life - He constantly exalted humility as the root of holiness, contrasting pride as the root of all sin.
6. The Seven Deadly Sins and Corresponding Virtues – St. Anthony frequently analyzed the root causes of sin (pride, envy, anger, sloth, avarice, gluttony, lust) and contrasted them with the theological and cardinal virtues (faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude).
7. Poverty of Spirit and Franciscan Detachment - He emphasized inner poverty, freedom from greed, and reliance on God.
8. The Eucharist and the Presence of Christ - Profound reflections on the Blessed Sacrament, reverence for the Mass, and the transforming power of the Eucharist.
9. Spiritual Warfare and Temptation - He spoke often about the devil’s strategies and the believer’s need for vigilance, purity of heart, and reliance on God’s grace.
10. Mercy, Compassion, and Almsgiving - He connected God’s mercy with the Christian duty to care for the poor, the weak, and the forgotten.
11. The Virgin Mary and the Saints - He dedicated numerous sermons to the Blessed Virgin Mary, praising her unique role in salvation history. He also used the lives of various saints as moral examples for his congregation
12. The Importance of Prayer - He taught that constant and fervent prayer is the indispensable means by which Christians draw strength from God and avoid temptation.
13. Living Out the Gospel Through Action, Not Words Alone - St. Anthony often taught: “Actions speak louder than words.” He stressed a life of integrity, witness, and concrete charity.
Second of 13-week devotion: Prayer to St. Anthony of Padua on his Sermon topic of ‘The Power and Authority of Sacred Scripture’ (December 23, 2025)
O glorious St. Anthony of Padua, faithful preacher of the Gospel and living Ark of the Testament, you who treasured the Word of God and proclaimed it with wisdom, clarity, and love, pray for me.
Teach me to revere Sacred Scripture as the living voice of God, powerful to instruct, to correct, and to transform the human heart. Help me to approach God’s Word with humility and openness, allowing it to shape my thoughts, guide my actions, and strengthen my faith.
As you used Scripture to dispel error and lead souls back to truth, grant me discernment to recognize what is false and courage to stand firmly upon God’s eternal Word. May the Scriptures not remain only on my lips or in my mind, but be written deeply in my heart and lived faithfully in my daily life.
St. Anthony, obtain for me a love for God’s Word that enlightens my understanding, consoles me in trials, and inspires me to uplift and encourage others. May the power of Sacred Scripture draw me ever closer to Christ, the Word made flesh, who lives and reigns forever. Amen.
