An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of gospel values.
AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR WHO:
The Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession
Integrity:
Similar to the CGE:
"An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of gospel values." (Institute for Catholic Education, 2018)
Moral action, honesty, reliability, and reflection are integral to both the CGE and the OCT standards of practice. The CGE promote being an honest communicator, in a time where communication is often skewed. The CGE promotes responding "sensitively" which is often a fruit of being a reflective person. Both the OCT standards and CGE are in alignment in their definition of what integrity is.(Institute for Catholic Education, 2018; OCT, 2018)
Our "integrity" is tested by what we proclaim, which is the Gospel values. In a public school, with so many differing beliefs, there isn't a source of "values" in which to contrast whether one is walking in integrity or not. As Catholic educators, our standards are coming from our Catholic worldview, and Biblical/ Church teachings. Our integrity is tested "in light of gospel values" which is not found in the OCT standards of practice, which is a general document, devoid of any faith based values. (Institute for Catholic Education, 2018; OCT, 2018)
What would I do?
I would model integrity by acting consistently, and fairly with all my students. I would not change my character outside of school, but be a consistent Christian at all times.I would try to live out the Gospel values to the best of my ability, for students to see the correlation between my life, and my demeanor and the Gospel messages. I would treat all my students with kindness, respect, and I would give each student an unconditional positive regard.
Documents relation to CGE arena for living:
The assignment below, "Character Development through the virtues" correlates with the CGE: "An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of gospel values." This assignment required students to read, reflect, and effectively communicate the differences between a virtues based program, and a value based character program. Effective communication that takes into account Gospel values is critical for this assignment, because students are called to consider the challenges that Catholic educators face when trying to instill virtues in students, and students in this assignment are instructed to explain their opinion, with regards to which program is more valuable, and whether the programs complement one another. The ability to read a document, analyze it, critique it, or explain it, requires effective communication skills. This is why I included this assignment under this CGE.
