A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good.
A REFLECTIVE AND CREATIVE THINKER WHO:
OCT Standards of Practice
Professional Practice
The OCT standard of Professional practice, requires that teachers are reflective educators and life-long learners. This is similar to the Catholic graduate expectations mentioned above, such as the fourth CGE of being a life -long learner. Indeed through reflection and commitment to learning new methods of teaching, teacher's are providing for students the latest and most effective teaching practices. (Institute for Catholic Education, 2018; OCT, 2018)
Our professional practice is guided by our aim to integrate the Ministry of Education requirements with the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations, which are based on Tradition and the Bible. This is different than the OCT standards of practice, which only takes into account the mechanical method of teaching, without taking into account the spiritual aspect of learning.(Institute for Catholic Education, 2018; OCT, 2018)
We must apply the dual mandate to our teaching practice, and this makes our teaching enriched with Gospel values, and will therefore produce good fruit, as an outcome (if tended properly). (Institute for Catholic Education, 2018)
What would I do?
I would enhance my professional practice by remaining a reflective educator, and collaborating with my peers, to determine best practice methods of delivery . I would specifically engage in discussions with Catholic educators, to find their methods for integrating my subject with the curriculum.
I would "shadow" teachers and have other teachers sit in during my lessons, so we can evaluate one another's teaching styles, and give one another feedback.
Documents relation to CGE arena for living:
The three assignments posted below all correlate with the CGE of being a "reflective, creative, and holistic thinker". The first assignment, titled: "Church and School", is designed to have students reflect on the extent that Catholic schools are a church for students. We were required to reflect on the similarities and differences, and I believe that creative thinking is important in this assignment, because it helps one see similar themes, symbols, and trends in both the Church and the School.
The Second assignment posted, required us to generate an example of a moral problem in a school setting, and students were required to reflect on how a Catholic approach would resolve the problem, versus a non-religious approach. Due to the fact that students were required to develop different approaches, using "reflective, creative, and holistic thinking", I believe that this assignment correlates with the CGE of being a "reflective, creative and holistic thinker".
The third assignment, also correlated with the CGE of being a "reflective, creative and holistic thinker", because students were required to reflect on two different prayers (the Lord's prayer), and a psalm of lament. The similarities and differences were noted, and discussed. Reflection was vital to this assignment as well, which is why I believe it correlates with this specific CGE.
