When you go to the garden you will undoubtedly notice a mountain of seasoned straw. If you don't notice it, please use that as a sign to go get your eyeglass prescription redone! Thanks to David Mabelle's inquisitive mind he was able to negotiate two truck loads of FREE seasoned straw from Ponderay Gardens. And Ponderay Gardens loaded and delivered it at no cost. Thank you David & Ponderay Gardens!
Here's what we will use it for. Since we have yet to locate a source for free bark, we will put down the straw on the paths and in the areas inbetween each of the beds. Cardboard needs to be laid down first and then a healthy layer of straw. We would appreciate all of you Plotters to start the process when you're there. We will need more cardboard to complete all the areas but there is enough there to get going on this. And anyone who has cardboard, please bring it to the garden. I will bring another load early next week.
Now, David has offered to teach a gardening class on Thursday, May 20th at 6:00 p.m. at the Garden. He has a strong background in permaculture and bio-dynamic gardening and would love to share his knowledge with all of us. He will field questions from the group and offer ideas and suggestions. It will be a great opportunity to learn (probably more than you ever wanted to know) about why your vegetables don't look like the ones in all the books you've read.
So please join David on Thursday and start laying down that cardboard and straw (tomorrow) in our beautiful Community Garden. It just keeps getting prettier by the plant.
