The secret of getting ahead is getting started

Dr. Salomón Cordero Sánchez
I was born and raised in Texcoco, a small town near to Mexico City. In that time this town was a quiet and very provincial. I remember picturesque views from my room window; one of them unforgettable, the ever snowed peaks of Popocatepetl (meaning smoking vulcano in aztec) and Iztaccihuatl (meaning woman sleeping in aztcec). From a very early age I showed great sensibility and charisma within my family. My values were impressed by my parents; Salomón Cordero Ortega, an exiled teacher forced to escape from Guatemala after the Arbenz´s coup d'état (1954) coordinated by the CIA; and Ana María Sánchez Hernández, a school teacher coming from a family of central Mexico. They always promoted great sense of duty and honesty among their offspring. Unlike other people whose first contact with knowledge and culture occurs at their school, I got it through my parents, who took me to museums and taught me history and science.
At the age of 24, I discovered my passion for academia at the Metropolitan Autonomous University, taking graduate courses with excellent professors such as Vicente Mayagoitia, Fernando Rojas and Alberto Vela. Their always excellent research was my inspiration and reference. From that moment, my life has been shaped intertwining three concepts: learning, creativity and teaching.
From a very personal view, I think that science itself is worthless. It is the positive link that arise among people, due to the understanding of nature, which makes science worthwhile. This is why teaching is one of the activities which I enjoy most. So much that to date the only source which leads my academic activity is provided by my students. They are whom I dedicate my projects and my everyday academic activities.
At this stage of my life I am at the peak of my mental capacity and I feel fully motivated to lead two research projects: "adsorption processes in fractal media" and "novel educational methods to promote active learning and to provoke fascination for science".
Outside the classroom I enjoy three things, my friends, sports and my private life.
