• [EN] In our lab, we link urban economic theory with real-world data. This requires both the rigor of economic theory and statistics, as well as the social insight to question whether underlying assumptions are truly correct.
The methods and models we use are not mathematically complex compared to fields like engineering. However, the goal of economics is not to master complex math. It is to ask sharp questions about real-world economic phenomena, compare data with theory, and pursue a logical truth—the "one and only answer."
Furthermore, to understand how activities at different locations interact with one another, you need the patience for deep, complex thinking in both analyzing data and defining problems. If you feel the limits of just discussing freely about society or cities, or if you find a quiet joy in thinking things through to the very end, your depth of thought belongs in urban economics..
[JP] 当研究室では、都市経済学の理論とデータを結びつける研究を行っています。そこでは経済理論や統計学の厳密さと、それらの前提の正しさを疑う社会的な洞察力の両方が求められます。
我々の研究室で扱う手法やモデルは、工学系などの研究と比べれば数学的にそれほど高度なものではありません。しかし経済学のゴールは複雑なモデルを扱う数理的技術を極めることではなく、現実の経済現象に対して厳密な問いを立て、データと理論を照らし合わせながら、「これ以外にあり得ない」という論理的な真実を追求することにあります。
そして、都市の各地点で相互に関係しながら発生するさまざまな活動の本質的メカニズムをとらえるには、分析と課題設定の両方で複雑な思考に耐える力が要求されます。社会や都市についてただ自由に論じることにどこか疑問や限界を感じていたり、論理的に物事を突き詰める孤独な時間に何らかの楽しみを見出せるなら、あなたのその思考の深さは都市経済学で生かされるべきかもしれません。

• [EN]Lectures and Self-Study: I will explain the foundation of representative models and methods in my lectures. However, you must take the lead in surveying literature and mastering the technical skills needed for your specific topic.

• [EN] Our lab is a multinational environment. Therefore, the working language for all seminars and research discussions is English. This is a practical necessity for ensuring effective collaboration between international and domestic students. Fluency is not the priority; logical clarity is. Even if your English is "broken," we expect you to communicate your ideas in your own words.

[EN]To maintain academic rigor, students must choose one of the following two paths by the end of their first year (M1). These two methodologies represent the current mainstream of Urban Economics. All members are required to master the fundamental knowledge of both paths, regardless of their own specialization.

Protocol-Zero and the Frontier / プロトコル・ゼロとフロンティア
• [EN] Success in mastering these two protocols A and B at the Master’s level depends on a fundamental understanding of microeconomics acquired from the undergraduate level through M1. Rather than merely solving specified functions, the use of diagrammatic analysis and comparative statics (Implicit Function Theorem) is crucial for enhancing abstract comprehension. If you have the opportunity to write a graduation thesis during your undergraduate studies, I strongly recommend that you intentionally avoid the standard empirical analysis that most students choose. Instead, I encourage you to challenge yourself with these methods as "Protocol Zero"—a foundational stage that precedes the conventional two protocols.
[JP] 修士課程でのこの2つのプロトコル（A、B）の習得の成否を決めるのが、学部からM1にかけて習得する、ミクロ経済学の基礎的な理解です。単に特定化された関数を解いて明示解を求めるだけでなく、作図と比較静学分析（陰関数定理）こそが、より抽象的な理解力を高めるのに役立ちます。もし学部で卒論を書く機会があれば、あえてみんながやるであろう実証分析を避け、２つのプロトコルに先立つ「プロトコル・ゼロ」としてのこれらの手法に挑戦することを強くお勧めします。
• [EN] Furthermore, while the most advanced research integrates these two approaches, students are permitted to undertake such integrated studies only after demonstrating the ability to produce a paper of publishable quality using one of the individual methodologies and possessing the skills of Protocol Zero—the intuitive understanding supported by theoretical techniques—which acts as a catalyst connecting the two. I am personally tackling this integrated theme; however, I must candidly acknowledge that I still face ongoing challenges regarding the rigorous identification of structural parameters within Protocol A.

Varian—until you can independently reproduce the core theoretical arguments, combined with repeatedly solving practice problems, you can achieve a passing level of academic proficiency in six months to a year. Leverage your background in urban economics, a field that demands a multifaceted perspective.
[JP] 学部で経済学を学んでいない学生の受験も歓迎します。「ミクロ経済学の力」（神取道宏著、日本評論社）などのミクロ経済学の教科書の議論を自分で再現できるまで精読することと、演習問題を繰り返し解くことの両方をバランスよく行なうことで、半年から１年で合格水準の学力が身につきます。あなたのバックグラウンドを、都市経済学という多角的視点を要求する分野で生かしてください。
• Entrance Exam / 入試:
o [EN] Writing exam: You must pass the departmental exam and select "Microeconomics."

o [EN] Interview: Please give a presentation of approximately 15 minutes. We evaluate your ability to represent original ideas through structurally sound diagrams and equations. Superficial complexity is not required; we look for the internal consistency of your logic.

• Recommendation based exam / 推薦入試:
o [EN] During an approximately 4-week preparation period, applicants are required to read designated academic paper(s). On the examination day, a specialized written exam and interview will be conducted to assess their comprehension of the content. Prior research achievements, such as an undergraduate thesis, are not heavily emphasized. Application requirements are a foundational academic proficiency deemed sufficient to pass standard graduate school admissions examinations and a guarantee of enrollment in case you pass the exam. Prospective applicants must contact us prior to submitting their application.
