• [EN] In this lab, we focus on the strict connection between theory and data in Urban Economics. A Master’s thesis is not just a requirement for graduation; it is your first step into the world of academic logic.

Lectures and Self-Study / 講義と自習の使い分け
• [EN] I will explain the foundation of representative models and methods in my lectures. However, you must take the lead in surveying literature and mastering the technical skills needed for your specific topic.
[JP] 代表的なモデルの基本や分析手法については、講義で一通り解説します。しかし、自分の選んだテーマに関する文献調査や、解析スキルの習得については、自分で文献を探して習得してください。
Mentoring & Seminars / 指導の形式
• [EN] Seminars: Students are required to present their progress in seminars twice per semester, including the joint seminar.
[JP] ゼミ: 半期に2回のゼミ報告（合同ゼミを含む）を求めます。自身の進捗を客観的に検証する場として活用してください。
• [EN] Individual Meetings: To prevent research stagnation, I recommend meeting once a month as a general guideline. However, please understand that I am not your private tutor; I am your first reviewer (Referee). Therefore, I will not provide you with "correct answers." I will provide candid, dispassionate comments strictly on the materials you present. If the preparation of the materials or the thought process is significantly insufficient, I will terminate the meeting after pointing out those specific deficiencies. If you find such direct feedback psychologically burdensome, this lab is not the right fit for you.
• [JP] 個別面談: 研究の停滞を防ぐため、1ヶ月に一度程度の対話を推奨します。ただし、私はあなたの家庭教師ではなく、最初の査読者（Referee）ですので、正解を教えることはしません。あなたが提示した資料に対してのみ、感情を排した率直なコメントを返します。資料の準備や思考のプロセスが著しく不十分な場合は、その点の指摘に止めて面談を終了します。もしこうした対応に心理的負担を感じるなら、ここはあなたにとって良い研究室ではありません。
Research and Lifestyle / 研究と生活のスタイル
• [EN] While I personally engage in research 365 days a year, I do so out of my own interest; students are under no obligation to do the same. All educational and supervisory matters are handled strictly during weekday working hours.

• [EN] This lab is not the right fit for you. We promise an environment where you can immerse yourself in your research without social "noise." We encourage an autonomous research life with a clear distinction between public and private.

[EN]To maintain academic rigor, students must choose one of the following paths by the end of their first year (M1).

• Path A: Simulation & Analysis (Theory-based)/シミュレーションと理論分析
o [EN] Focus on structural models in Quantitative Spatial Economics, conducting model calibration and counterfactual analysis.

o Benchmark: Redding and Sturm (2008, AER)
• Path B: Empirical Analysis (Identification-focused)/実証分析（識別に特化）
o [EN] Focus on causal inference (e.g., Difference-in-Differences), prioritizing identification strategies and careful selection of control groups.
[JP] 因果推論（DiD等）を用い、注目した因果関係の識別の厳密さと比較対象の選定に注力します。
o Benchmark: Greenstone, Hornbeck, and Moretti (2010, JPE)
• [EN] These two methodologies represent the current mainstream of Urban Economics. All members are required to master the fundamental knowledge of both paths, regardless of their own specialization.

Protocol-Zero and the Frontier / プロトコル・ゼロとフロンティア
• [EN] Success in mastering these two protocols A and B at the Master’s level depends on a fundamental understanding of microeconomics acquired from the undergraduate level through M1. Rather than merely solving specified functions, the use of diagrammatic analysis and comparative statics (Implicit Function Theorem) is crucial for enhancing abstract comprehension. If you have the opportunity to write a graduation thesis during your undergraduate studies, I strongly recommend that you intentionally avoid the standard empirical analysis that most students choose. Instead, I encourage you to challenge yourself with these methods as "Protocol Zero"—a foundational stage that precedes the conventional two protocols.
[JP] 修士課程でのこの2つのプロトコル（A、B）の習得の成否を決めるのが、学部からM1にかけて習得する、ミクロ経済学の基礎的な理解です。単に特定化された関数を解いて明示解を求めるだけでなく、作図と比較静学分析（陰関数定理）こそが、より抽象的な理解力を高めるのに役立ちます。もし学部で卒論を書く機会があれば、あえてみんながやるであろう実証分析を避け、２つのプロトコルに先立つ「プロトコル・ゼロ」としてのこれらの手法に挑戦することを強くお勧めします。
• [EN] Furthermore, while the most advanced research integrates these two approaches, students are permitted to undertake such integrated studies only after demonstrating the ability to produce a paper of publishable quality using one of the individual methodologies and possessing the skills of Protocol Zero—the intuitive understanding supported by theoretical techniques—which acts as a catalyst connecting the two. I am personally tackling this integrated theme; however, I must candidly acknowledge that I still face ongoing challenges regarding the rigorous identification of structural parameters within Protocol A.
[JP] 最先端の研究ではこれら2つの手法が統合されていますが、個別の手法でそれぞれ出版レベルの論文を書ける能力を証明し、かつ両者をつなぐ触媒としてのプロトコル・ゼロの能力（理論的技術に裏付けられた直感的理解）を持っている場合のみ、そのような統合的研究への着手を認めます。私自身もこの統合的なテーマに挑戦中ですが、特にプロトコルAにおける構造パラメータの識別の厳密さについては、いまだに克服すべき課題があることを付記しておきます。
• Entrance Exam / 入試:
o [EN] You must pass the departmental exam and select "Microeconomics."

• Interview / 面接:
o [EN] Please give a presentation of approximately 15 minutes regarding your own graduation research or a similar project you have conducted. If you do not have one, please read a research paper related to Urban Economics and speak about its contents. At the end of your interview, please present a brief proposal. We evaluate your ability to represent original ideas through structurally sound diagrams and equations. Superficial complexity is not required; we look for the internal consistency of your logic.
[JP] 15分程度のプレゼンテーションを課します。表面的なコミュニケーションやプレゼン能力ではなく、こちらの質問を正しく理解した上で返答できるかという、学術的な対話能力を重視します。文章だけでなく、構造的に考え抜かれた図表や数式で自身のアイデアを表現する能力を評価します。表面的な複雑さではなく、論理の内部一貫性を重視します。
• Selection Policy / 選考方針:
o [EN] We prioritize candidates who possess a fundamental understanding of microeconomics, the resilience to pursue long-term research, and a self-reliant personality capable of making a meaningful contribution to our small-scale community.
