Purpose of this Activity: In this day of instant news feeds, social media blitzes, and the advent of anyone posting anything that can appear to be official, requires students to become information skeptics. Prospective researchers and the average citizen need 21st century evaluating skills in order to sift through the Internets ever expanding information data base and use it. Many times when we compile information from the internet it is difficult for novice researchers to gain factual information and at the same time avoid copyright, plagiarism, and citing issues. This tutorial is intended to assist student researchers in gaining knowledge of the internet, how to conduct searches for information and resources, how to evaluate those resources for accuracy, how to use the information once you have found it without copyright or plagiarism issues, and finally how to cite those sources.

Your instructor will lead you through this part of the lesson byMaria Kardick which helps students understand copyright, fair use, and plagiarism by focusing on why students should avoid plagiarism and exploring strategies that respect copyright and fair use. The lesson includes three parts, each framed by a KWL chart. In the first part, focusing on plagiarism, students discuss plagiarism and look at examples to determine whether the passages are plagiarized. Part two introduces copyright and fair use. Students use a Think-Pair-Share strategy to explore questions about fair use, then read several scenarios and determine if the uses described are fair use. In the third part, students develop paraphrasing skills through direct practice with paraphrasing text book passages using an online note-taking tool.
This lesson plan was developed as part of a collaborative professional project with the American Library Association Office for Information Technology Policy and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL).
