Applications of Virtual Reality in the Minerals Industry
Virtual Reality is a continuously evolving computer technology, which provides great opportunities for many industries. The University of Queensland Mining group has been involved in developing Virtual Reality applications since 2000 for the minerals industry in the areas of data visualization, education and training, environmental monitoring, accident reconstruction, simulation and hazard awareness applications. This talk discusses Virtual Reality techniques and some of the applications developed.

Saeid Nahavandi (Alfred Deakin Professor, Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation, Deakin University)
Saeid Nahavandi received his BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD in Control Engineering from Durham University, UK in 1985, 1986 and 1991 respectively. Saeid is an Alfred Deakin Professor, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Defence Technologies) and the Director for the Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation at Deakin University in Australia. Professor Nahavandi is a Fellow member of IET, IEAust and Senior Member of IEEE and has published over 700 refereed papers and been awarded several competitive Australian Research Council (ARC) grants over the past 21 years. He received the Research collaboration/initiatives award from Japan (2000) and Prince & Princess of Wales Science Award in 1994. He won the title of Young Engineer of the Year Award in 1996 and holds four patents. In 2002 Professor Nahavandi served as a consultant to the Jet Propulsion Lab (NASA) during his visit to JPL Labs. Professor Nahavandi was General Co-Chair for the IEEE SMC 2011. He also holds the position of Co-Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Systems Journal, Associate Editor: IEEE/ASME Mechatronics, Associate Editor: IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SYSTEMS, MAN, AND CYBERNETICS: SYSTEMS, Associate Editor: IEEE SMC Magazine.
Redwan Alqasemi (Research Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Lead Researcher, Center for Assistive, Rehabilitation and Robotics Technologies (CARRT),University of South Florida)
Redwan Alqasemi, Ph.D., is a research professor at the University of South Florida’s Mechanical Engineering Department and a lead researcher at the Center for Assistive, Rehabilitation and Robotics Technologies (CARRT). Dr. Alqasemi is a member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), and a board member of the Lifeboat Foundation Scientific Advisory Board. He served as a panelist for several NSF programs. Dr. Alqasemi has published more than 150 technical papers in national and international journals and conferences in the field of robotics, human-machine interface, and assistive/rehabilitation technologies.
