History
Thousands of years ago, much of modern day Varisia was ruled by the Thassilonian empire, which crumbled during Earthfall. Thousands of years passed until 4405 AR, when Cheliax began expanding into the Southern reaches of Varisia. During this time, two native human cultures existed: Shoanti and Varisian.
Government
Varisia has no central government, instead it is a collection of independent city-states. These city-states hold sway over small collections of towns and villages. Most of the wilderness territory is claimed by the Shoanti.
Culture
Shoanti are barbaric and often nomadic. Since the Chelish expansion, they have been pushed to the Storval Plateau and Velashu Uplands. Shoanti are split into seven tribes ("quahs"), each with their own traditions and beliefs. However, every tribe despises orcs, half-orcs, and Chelaxians.
Varisians are nomadic, often traveling in trading caravans. They've been given an unfair reputation as scoundrels and rogues due to the Sczarni. Most Varisians pass down tales and stories, some true, others embellished, of Varisian history.
Sczarni
The Sczarni are a loose collection of Varisian crime families. They mostly operate out of Varisia, though they can be found throughout the Inner Sea. Most Sczarni live up to their stereotypes of conmen, thieves, and tricksters.
