History
Four powerful families from Magnimar formed the Sandpoint Mercantile League to consolidate their efforts in constructing a town to support additional farmland for the city. The families secured the rights from Magnimar and moved North in 4555 AR. They found the area settled by a large tribe of Varisians. After a week of talks that led nowhere, Alamon Scarnetti, along with his brothers and cousins, attacked the Varisians, killing five befiore being forced to flee. The Sandpoint Mercantile League returned to Magnimar in defeat. Almah Deverin, displayed remarkable diplomatic skills and convinced the Magnimar High Court and Varisians to set aside the misunderstanding and work to build Sandpoint. She promised the Varisians that they would incorporate Desna into the cathedral, and to pay the Varisian Council a share of profits made by Sandpoint businesses over the next 40 years. One year later, construction began with full cooperation of the Varisians.
In the years since, Sandpoint has flourished. Though the initial compact with the Varisian Council has passed, Sandpoint's government elected to extend it for another 20 years. Today, Sandpoint is a thriving community, with many booming industries that draw skilled laborers and settlers. Sandpoint has been mostly free of disasters, with the exception of two notable ones: The Chopper and the Sandpoint Fire. These two events occurred recently, and not far apart, hence they are lumped together and referred as the "Late Unpleasantness". Most locals prefer not to talk about these events.
The Late Unpleasantness
Over the course of one long month, it seemed every day brought a new victim. Each was found in the same state: the body had deep cuts to the neck and torso, hands and feet were severed and stacked nearby, and the eyes and tongue were missing. The killer was nicknamed Chopper, and he claimed 25 victims over the course of the month. Sheriff Casp Avertin caught the murderer in a narrow lane (now known as Chopper's Alley) as he was mutilating his latest victim. Sheriff Avertin landed a crippling blow, but was slain in the process. Belor Hemlock, a town guard, found Avertin and the victim's body, he rounded up the guards and followed the killer's bloody trail. The trail led to the home of Jervis Stoot, an eccentric, but well-liked resident. Inside Stoot's residence they found a horrific altar with the eyes and tongues of all 25 victims. Stoot's body lay dead, having plucked his own eyes and tongue out as his last offering. The guards collapsed the entrance to the lower levels, burned down the house, and tore down the stairway from the cliffs.
A month after Chopper was slain, a terrible fire struck Sandpoint. The fire started in the chapel and quickly spread, leaving the town's priest Ezakien Tobyn and his adopted daughter Nualia dead.
