Topics

The main objectives of the bilateral projects are:

    • RODIN project: the design and performance assessment of energy-efficient optical interconnection networks
    • DEMO-RODIN project: the experimental realization and validation of the energy-efficient optical interconnection networks
    • NANO-RODIN project: the photonic nano-technologies for the realization of integrated RODIN systems

Overview

Photonic switching technologies offer the opportunity to overcome the limitations of electronic interconnection networks.

    • In particular, optical interconnects can support high transmission rates and reduce the wiring density while providing data format transparency and electromagnetic field immunity. Moreover, the possibility to realize integrated optical circuits is making photonic technologies appealing to reduce the power consumption and the physical footprint of the interconnection network. RODIN and DEMO-RODIN projects, jointly carried out by Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and McGill University aims to tackle these issues: the challenge is to design high-performance optical interconnection networks
    • efficient schedulers suitable for the designed architectures
    • and to ensurethe scalability of the optical interconnection networks and schedulers
    • the energy efficiency of the optical interconnection network
    • a power consumption proportional to the interconnection utilization levels
    • integrated realization of the sub-systems and system
