Wood Green Animal Shelter 9th November 2019

posted Nov 15, 2019, 10:05 AM by Terry Cameron   [ updated Nov 15, 2019, 10:19 AM ]

An enjoyable day at the Wood Green Animal Shelter competition last weekend which was hosted by Cambridgeshire Flyball Team. Well done Rovers who finished 2nd in Division 4. Rovers ran their fastest time this year with a 19.43 seconds and broke out on that occasion and nearly breaking out a 2nd time. Rovers still have plenty of scope for tightening up on their changeovers so hope to see them break into the 18's in the new year. Rookies our Intermediate team finished in 3rd place which was a great result considering that for all bar one of the dogs it was only their 2nd competitive race. We are really excited about the prospects for this group of dogs as they gain more experience. Raccoons were seeded 4th and finished 4th in Division 6 again really pleased how the dogs performed with none of them putting a paw wrong. They were just up against faster teams on the day. Unfortunately Racketeers had to go not for competition part way through the day after doing so well in their previous races due to a couple of minor injuries but the dogs are fine and raring to go again. We have our last competition of the year coming up at Halefield Stud on the 8th December which is being hosted by Fenland Firestorm. We will be taking 2 teams to this tournament and then we will be focusing on training during January and February ready to start competing again in March 2020.

We had a really enjoyable day at the Halefield Stud tournament hosted by Fenland Firestorm.

First place finishes for both Mavericks and Mania.

Magic earned a 4th place finish in their division and Mayhem 6th. Unfortunately both of these teams were impacted by unavoidable late withdrawals and we are grateful to those members and dogs who stepped in to fill the gaps enabling both teams to race.

Well done to Ben, Blaze and Finn who made their debuts in the intermediary competition.

Congratulations also to Max who received his Flyball Dog Intermediate award and to Indie who received his Flyball Dog award.

Another milestone was reached by the Club at this tournament in that for the 1st time we entered 4 teams in a single day at a competition. Admittedly we found this hard going due to the frequency that we were required to have teams and people in the ring, but it was a valuable experience for us. Due to the rapid growth of the Club in recent months and with even more new handlers and dogs nearing open competition multiple teams will become more the norm.

East of England Showground 21st - 22nd September 2019

A very successful weekend for the club at the East of England Showground in a tournament hosted by Cambridgeshire Flyball Team.

All 4 teams returned with ribbons.

On Saturday:

Rockets put in a great performance to finish the day in 1st place in their division.

Rascals raced well all day to earn a 3rd place finish.

Our little league team gave club debuts to two new dogs (Stu and Blaze) and we were pleased with the overall performance of the team. Little league is the first step towards open competition for our newer dogs and gives teams the opportunity to give young dogs ring experience and to identify and iron out problems and issues without being under the pressures that open competition brings. Our little league teams also contain one or two retired/more experienced dogs to help develop the youngsters.

On Sunday:

Rovers earned a 2nd place finish in a very competitive division. This was maybe the best result of the weekend as none of these dogs had raced together before. The team got faster and faster as they day went on and got to the point where it looked as though they may break out and in fact they did in the last race of the day knocking off more than 1.2 seconds from the previous seed time.

Another 1st for Rocksteady this weekend was Sheena being awarded her Cadet Superior UKFL award. Sheena is the 1st club dog to reach the 5000 points milestone.

A shout out also to Toby who made his open competition debut on Sunday.

Special congratulations to both Aspen and Indie who received their UKFL Cadet awards at this comp.

A brilliant day for the Racketeers at the UKFL National Championships. We were by no means the fastest team in the division and were seeded last but all the dogs ran consistently well and we finished in 2nd place due to conceding minimal faults. A result beyond our wildest expectations.

A 2nd place finish for Rovers at Avon Dassett on Sunday. So close to 1st place - if we'd won just one more leg we would have pipped the winning team at the post by virtue of running the fastest time in the Division.

A really enjoyable day at a venue we have not visited before and our thanks go to Wash Warriors Flyball Club for a well organised event.

Very well done to Kylo Merle who received his UKFL Cadet Award today.

Just Dogs Live East of England Showground 6th July - 7th July 2019

We had 4 teams racing at Just Dogs Live this weekend in a tournament hosted by Fenland Firestorm.

On Saturday Mavericks raced in the Starter competition with several of the dogs running for the 1st time. The mornings racing can only be described as mayhem as we had dogs running out, not collecting or returning balls and even bluntly refusing to run at all. We entered the afternoon session expecting more of the same but the dogs proved us wrong and it was a complete reversal of the morning session with dogs running perfectly and we even won a few legs. This was not enough to push us into the Rosettes however but we were pleased that the dogs showed us what they were truly capable of in the end.

Madness ran well all day in the open competition and posted the fastest time of the division. We were up against some very good teams and did brilliantly to finish in 3rd place and earn a well deserved Rosette.

On Sunday our Starter team Minstrels were outstanding winning all of their morning races. We were just pipped at the post for 1st place in the last race of the day due to an individual error but we were well pleased with our second place finish and Rosettes.

Rocksteady Mojos running in the Sunday open competition also put in a brilliant performance winning all their morning races in some style. We led the division till the last race of the day where again an individual error left us tied for 1st place with 2 other teams. In the end we were placed 3rd based on fastest times. There was only 0.27 of a second separating the 1st 3 teams which showed how tight it was.

Well done to Happy and Kylo(red) who received their BFA flyball dog awards at this tournament. It was also great to see Shelby returning to tournament racing this weekend after a spell out through injury.

RSPCA Southridge 29th June 2019 - 30th June 2019

At RSPCA Southridge we sent 2 teams to compete in a tournament hosted by Hotshots.

Due to several dogs being unable to race due to other commitments both teams were a bit of a mix and match. On a positive note it enabled us to inject some new blood into the teams by awarding open team debuts. We weren't quite sure how the teams would gel but on the day we were delighted with how well all of the dogs ran. Although neither team made it into the Rosettes both Rascals and Rockets earned well deserved 4th places with Rockets achieving a new seed time for this year.

Well done to Kylo(red) who received his UKFL Cadet Award at this competition.

Wisbech 25th May 2019

A fantastic days racing yesterday at Wisbech in a tournament hosted by Wash Warriors.

Rocksteady Rockets raced in Division 1. This was the first time we had qualified to race in the top Division for quite some time. Rockets surpassed all expectations by winning the Division. We weren't the fastest team in the division but were the most consistent running clean legs all day long which took us over the line quite comfortably in the end. Rockets ran consistently in the 19's with a fastest time of 19.50 seconds which was our quickest time of the year. Well done to Poppy, Rex, Indie, Quincy and their handlers Hannah, Simon, Steve and Mary. Although not available to run yesterday we must recognise the contribution of the two Kylos and their handlers Sabina and Sam. Their performances in recent competitions contributed greatly in getting the team into the 19s and into Division 1 for this tournament. Indie and Steve who were running in Open competition for the 1st time proved to be able deputies.

Rocksteady Rascals ran in Division 3 and although the result was not quite as spectacular as that achieved by the Rockets, they had moments of brilliance at times throughout the day. Rascals ended the day 4th in their division and with a little more consistency could well have finished higher. Well done to Cub, Alf, Happy, Max, Rupert, Maxi and their handlers Mick B, Emma, Jade, Helen, Mick D, and Mary.

Halefield Stud 7th April 2019

Another good days racing yesterday at Halefield Stud hosted by Fenland Firestorm Flyball Club. Rocksteady Madness did brilliantly to achieve a 2nd place finish and Rocksteady Mojos just missed out on 3rd place finishing 4th in their division.

The day was a very special one for another reason however as it marked Merlin's (pictured below with his owners Mick and Mary) retirement from open racing on his 13th birthday.

Merlin started his Flyball career in 2007 racing with High Flyers and achieved his 1st award (Flyball Dog) at Newark on the 16th February 2008.

In subsequent years Merlin raced with Northants Falcons, Knebworth Twisters, Go Fours and finally Rocksteady who he joined in January 2016. During these years the awards continued to mount up culminating with him achieving his Flyball Dog Pearl award with Rocksteady on the 9th July 2016 at Just Dogs Live for reaching 30,000 points, which is one of the highest awards a dog can achieve.

Prior to yesterday Merlin had amassed an amazing total of 34,325 points.

Merlin was also twice a divisional winner at the BFA annual championships in 2009 and 2011 and competed at Crufts in 2011. Merlin has also achieved his Cadet Advanced UKFL award.

To mark this occasion a special presentation was made to Merlin and his owners Mick and Mary by Sharon Allcorn the retiring BFA Chairperson who is a member of High Flyers where Merlin began his career.

This is not the end of Merlin's association with Rocksteady as he will continue to train and compete with our Starter Dogs to act as a mentor and show them the way to future success.
