The trauma of an unexpected bereavement should not be compounded by sudden heavy taxes on the family property. It would be more just if we had a choice to give the fruits of our life's labour, after a Wealth Tax, to our family or other beneficiaries rather than a large portion of it being taken suddenly, after death, by the government. Inflation is caused by too much money chasing too few goods and services. Inflation is a tax on savings and a common annoyance. Therefore, abolish death duties and adjust the rate of a wealth tax to achieve zero inflation. A rate of 1% per year would be similar to transferring an individual's wealth to the nation over a lifetime of 100 years. Judging by currently accepted inflation rates (in the UK) of 2 or 3% it may be necessary to increase the average rate of wealth tax above 1%. It would discourage hoarding of land and property and may reduce their price.
